The European Commission has achieved a significant milestone in its European Strategy for Universities by launching 14 new alliances, bringing the total to 64 European University alliances across 35 countries, including EU member states and others. These alliances aim to foster a truly European dimension in higher education, supported by substantial funding from the Erasmus+ programme.
Each of the 64 alliances, comprising over 560 diverse higher education institutions, will receive up to €14.4 million over four years. This funding is pivotal in promoting transnational cooperation and enhancing educational quality and accessibility across Europe.
A standout initiative is the FOR-EU4All project, coordinated by the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU). This project, supported by €1.8 million in Erasmus+ funding, aims to create a collaborative “community of practice” among European Universities. It will facilitate the sharing of best practices, policy dialogues, and educational innovations across the alliances and broader higher education sectors.
Rita Dias from the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) and other stakeholders have welcomed these developments, emphasizing their potential to enhance European integration and educational opportunities. The alliances not only promote student mobility and joint study programs but also aim to establish a European Degree and ensure quality assurance in education and research activities.
Despite challenges such as Brexit affecting funding eligibility for UK universities, initiatives like OpenEU demonstrate inclusive collaboration across borders, focusing on digital and sustainable education. This exemplifies the alliances’ commitment to overcoming barriers and fostering a cohesive European higher education area.
Margaritis Schinas and Iliana Ivanova from the European Commission underscored the alliances’ role in creating European inter-university campuses and promoting a sense of European belonging. They envision these initiatives as contributing to a “fifth freedom” of the single market—freedom to learn, study, teach, and research without borders.
