Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced on Monday that a site in Rivona village, located in south Goa, has been identified for establishing a campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). The Central government’s site selection committee inspected the location, identified by the state government in Rivona, Sanguem taluka, to assess its suitability for the IIT Goa campus.

In a written reply presented in the assembly, Sawant stated that the committee has recommended the site for the permanent campus of IIT Goa, contingent upon the state government providing adequate connectivity through approach roads, power supply, and water supply, as well as allowing changes in land zoning and relaxation of Floor Area Ratio (FAR). The revenue department is currently verifying the title documents for the identified land.

Previously, the state government encountered opposition from local residents on two occasions while selecting the site in Rivona. Despite this, Sawant emphasized the importance of IIT Goa as an institute of national significance, offering professional education at undergraduate, postgraduate, and research levels. He highlighted the potential employment opportunities for teaching and non-teaching staff, including Goans and aspirants from across the nation.

Sawant assured that the government would implement adequate safeguards to minimize any adverse environmental impact and preserve existing green cover when granting necessary project approvals for the IIT Goa campus.
