SIOUX FALLS — Two schools in Sioux Falls, Washington High School and Anne Sullivan Elementary, went into shelter-in-place Monday afternoon following reports of a potential armed individual near the area. The incident began with a well-being check around noon, during which police were alerted that the subject might be armed.
As the schools were taking precautions, a separate report of an active shooter at Washington High was received. Authorities responded swiftly but later confirmed that the threat was not credible.
Sioux Falls Police spokesperson Sam Clemens reported that the individual involved in the well-being check was located later in the afternoon, and it was determined there was no danger to the public.
Extra police presence remained in the area throughout the day as a precaution. The Sioux Falls School District will communicate with parents regarding student dismissal procedures at both schools.
