The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has released essential guidelines for K-12 schools to effectively manage the increasing number of anonymous threats. With over 6,000 such threats reported against schools in 2022, the agency emphasizes the need for proactive measures to maintain safety and minimize disruption within educational environments.

CISA’s report outlines six key strategies for school districts to enhance their threat response protocols:

  1. Enhance Reporting Awareness: Schools should encourage community members to report threats immediately, promoting the mantra “Report, Don’t Repost.” Engaging parents and students in discussions about the consequences of sharing threats is vital.
  2. Establish Partnerships: Collaborating with agencies like the FBI and local law enforcement, as well as mental health professionals, is crucial in developing effective responses to threats and addressing the emotional impacts on students and staff.
  3. Utilize Multidisciplinary Threat Assessment Teams: Schools are advised to form teams comprising administrators, law enforcement, and counselors when assessing threats. This collaborative approach helps evaluate the severity of threats and determine appropriate interventions for at-risk students.
  4. Balance Initial Responses: While implementing responses such as lockdowns, schools must consider the potential trauma these actions may inflict on students, aiming for a measured approach that can adapt as situations develop.
  5. Triage Threats: Schools should work with law enforcement to assess the context of each threat. Identifying patterns can aid in adjusting responses and recognizing imminent risks.
  6. Improve Preparedness: Regular safety drills and clear communication processes for informing families during emergencies are essential components of a robust preparedness plan.
