The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has announced a groundbreaking admission pathway for its BTech and BS programs, enabling students to qualify based on achievements in international Olympiads. Beginning in the 2025-26 academic year, this initiative aims to provide direct entry for students who have demonstrated exceptional performance in international Olympiads across subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Informatics.
This program marks a significant departure from the traditional admission route via the JEE (Advanced) examination. IIT Kanpur will reserve seats in five departments: Biological Sciences & Bioengineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Chemistry, Economic Sciences, and Mathematics & Statistics. Designed for high-achieving students with intensive training and expertise in Olympiad subjects, the initiative offers them the opportunity to pursue advanced education at one of India’s premier engineering institutions.
Eligibility Criteria for the Olympiad Admission Pathway:
To apply, candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Be within the age limit set for JEE (Advanced) candidates.
- Have taken their Class XII (or equivalent) exams for the first time in the admission year or the preceding year, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as mandatory subjects.
- Have participated in the relevant Olympiad training camp for the subject they are applying to study at IIT Kanpur.
Notably, candidates who have previously gained admission to any IIT via the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) or had their admission canceled are not eligible for this Olympiad-based pathway.
Selection Process:
The selection process for this admission route will occur in two stages:
- Initial Review: Departments will shortlist candidates based on their Olympiad rankings.
- Examinations: Shortlisted candidates will take a written examination, followed by interviews if required. A selection committee, headed by the Dean of Academic Affairs, will manage the final selection to fill department seats.
Timeline for Admissions:
The admissions timeline begins in March 2025:
- Early March 2025: Applications open.
- End of March 2025: Application window closes.
- May 2025: Departments will conduct screenings and examinations.
- June 2025: Final admission offers extended.
