The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to introduce a dual-level course structure for Science and Social Science in Classes 9 and 10. This move, expected to take effect from the 2026-27 academic session, follows the successful model implemented in Mathematics, where courses are offered at standard and advanced levels.

The specifics of the new framework, such as whether advanced-level students will follow different study materials or just a more challenging exam format, remain undecided. CBSE is awaiting the publication of updated NCERT textbooks aligned with the National Curriculum Framework to guide these changes.


NEP 2020’s Influence

The introduction of these two-level courses aligns with the NEP 2020‘s vision, which states: “All subjects and corresponding assessments, beginning with Mathematics, could be offered at two levels, with students doing some of their subjects at the standard level and some at a higher level.” This approach is aimed at supporting diverse learning paces and reducing undue academic stress.
