The Kerala General Education Department has imposed a one-year ban on Mar Basil HSS, Kothamangalam, and Navamukunda HSS, Thirunavaya, prohibiting their participation in this year’s Kerala State Schools Sports Meet.

The decision follows recommendations from a three-member committee that investigated protests at the closing ceremony of last November’s meet at Maharaja’s College Ground, Ernakulam.

Protest Over Trophy Distribution

  • Background: Traditionally, separate trophies are awarded to general schools and sports division schools for first, second, and third positions. However, in 2023, the organisers combined the categories without prior notice.
  • Outcome:
    • GV Raja Sports School, Thiruvananthapuram (sports division) claimed the runners-up spot, pushing Navamukunda HSS (44 points) to third.
    • Mar Basil HSS (43 points) was relegated to fourth place.
    • Ideal EHSS secured the championship with 80 points.

This unexpected change triggered protests from students of Navamukunda and Mar Basil, who alleged unfair treatment and expressed dissatisfaction with the organisers’ decision.

Allegations of Police Misconduct

During the protests, students claimed they were shoved by police and that their grievances went unheard. This added to the controversy surrounding the event and led to calls for transparency in future competitions.

Committee’s Recommendations and Ban

A three-member panel was appointed to investigate the incident. Based on their findings, the education department imposed the ban to uphold the integrity of the sports meet and prevent similar disruptions in the future.

Implications

This ban highlights the importance of transparent communication and adherence to established practices in organising competitive events. The affected schools are expected to reflect on the incident and focus on constructive engagement moving forward.
