The Ministry of Education has issued a directive to all states and union territories to implement the “Guidelines on School Safety and Security-2021,” a framework designed to enhance the safety and well-being of students in government and private schools.
Developed by the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) in response to Supreme Court directives, these guidelines aim to establish a comprehensive safety structure for schools across India.
Key Features of the Safety Guidelines
The 2021 school safety guidelines address multiple aspects of student security:
- Physical Security: Strengthening school infrastructure to prevent safety breaches.
- Socio-Emotional Well-being: Promoting a safe and supportive environment for students.
- Disaster Preparedness: Equipping schools to handle natural disasters and emergencies.
- Preventive Education: Encouraging schools to involve parents, teachers, and students in safety initiatives.
Implementation at the State Level
The Ministry has directed all states and union territories to adapt and enforce these guidelines as per their local contexts. Authorities have been asked to ensure the prompt notification and implementation of these safety measures.
