Coimbatore Corporation Introduces AR-VR Labs in Two Schools

To enhance the quality of education and student engagement, the Coimbatore Corporation has introduced Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (AR-VR) labs in two schools on a pilot basis, with an estimated cost of ₹70 lakh per lab. The initiative aims to improve conceptual understanding by integrating immersive learning experiences.

The project was initially planned for five schools but has been implemented at Sidhapudur Corporation Girls High School and SRP Ammaniammal Girls Higher Secondary School in RS Puram. The official inauguration is scheduled for next week, but a trial class has already been conducted at RS Puram school, receiving positive feedback from both students and teachers.

Enhancing Learning with AR-VR

The AR-VR learning model allows students to experience detailed visualizations of subjects like physics and chemistry, making complex concepts easier to understand.

Subiksha S., a Class 8 student, shared her experience:
“We experienced minute detailing of each subject. Relatability in topics like physics or chemistry was easier.”

Teachers also highlighted the benefits of VR-based learning, stating that it minimizes distractions and improves student focus.

Sridevi B., a science teacher, explained:
“Despite using PowerPoint presentations, some students struggle with certain topics. With VR, they can explore subjects with a 360° immersive experience, making learning more engaging and effective.”

Impact on Student Performance

K. Ramesh, headmaster of SRP Ammaniammal Girls Higher Secondary School, emphasized the positive impact of the initiative:
“This learning method has a direct effect on student performance and is expected to improve their marks by at least 30%.”

According to Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabhakaran, the labs will feature over 3,000 educational modules, with 1,100 syllabus-based models already available:

  • 500 modules for Classes 1-5
  • 500 modules for Classes 6-10
  • 100 modules for higher secondary students

More topics will be developed based on teacher requirements to support personalized learning experiences.

Future Expansion and Assessments

The success of the pilot project will determine the expansion of AR-VR labs to more schools. Student performance and feedback will be analyzed before rolling out similar labs across other educational institutions in Coimbatore.

The VR laboratory can accommodate 22 students per session, with assessments conducted via tablets. After each session, students receive instant performance scores, allowing teachers to monitor progress. Teachers also have the flexibility to schedule or conduct tests on the spot using preloaded questions.

Conclusion

The introduction of AR-VR technology in Coimbatore schools marks a significant step toward modernizing education. By providing interactive and immersive learning experiences, this initiative is expected to enhance student comprehension, boost performance, and foster curiosity. If successful, similar labs could soon become a standard feature in more schools across the city.
