New Delhi, March 7, 2025 – A Tamil Nadu-based lawyer has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court seeking the implementation of the three-language policy under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and West Bengal.

Advocate G.S. Mani, who filed the PIL, argued that all other states have adopted the Tri-Language Curriculum, except for these three. He emphasized that the NEP 2020 aims to enhance education quality across India by ensuring students from all backgrounds have access to a multi-language learning system.

Opposition from State Governments

The petition highlights that the chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and West Bengal have openly opposed NEP 2020, stating that they cannot accept the policy. Mani argues that language education should be free for all, particularly benefiting students from disadvantaged communities, including those from scheduled tribes, backward classes, and economically weaker sections.

Alleged Violation of Fundamental Rights

The PIL also contends that free education is a fundamental right. By refusing to implement NEP 2020, these states are allegedly denying students access to quality language education. The plea urges the Supreme Court to intervene and direct these states to comply with the policy.

The case is now set for judicial review, with the court expected to examine the legal and constitutional aspects of the three-language formula under NEP 2020.
