Microsoft Joins Skill Ministry to Train Women in AI
The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has joined hands with Microsoft to launch the AI Careers for Women initiative. This skilling program targets female students in higher education and helps them build successful careers in artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative directly addresses the gender gap in tech by offering practical, industry-ready AI training.
Microsoft Offers a 240-Hour AI Training Program
To equip students with relevant knowledge, Microsoft will deliver a 240-hour training program. The curriculum aligns with current industry standards and was developed in partnership with the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET).
Unlike traditional lecture formats, the program emphasizes hands-on learning. Through structured modules, learners will gain exposure to AI tools, machine learning concepts, and digital innovation. As a result, participants will be better prepared for in-demand tech roles.
Program Expands Through 180 Institutions Nationwide
To ensure widespread access, the initiative will operate on a hub-and-spoke model. It will include:
- 30 Centres of Excellence (Hubs)
- 150 Participating Colleges (Spokes)
These institutions are located in Tier-II and Tier-III towns across six Indian states. By focusing on smaller cities, the program reaches students who might otherwise lack access to advanced technical training.
Aligned with NEP and Integrated into University Courses
The training will not function as a separate short course. Instead, it will integrate directly into university curricula, making it eligible for academic credit. This integration supports the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes flexible, skill-based education models.
Minister Jayant Chaudhary highlighted the importance of such alignment.
“We are reshaping 21st-century learning by embedding this initiative into credit-linked university programs and adapting it to real-world industry needs,” he stated.
Initiative Empowers Women and Encourages Innovation
By offering structured learning and mentorship, the initiative helps empower women in tech. It also contributes to India’s broader digital transformation and growth in the innovation economy.
In addition, Microsoft will provide digital resources and training platforms. These tools ensure that learners have access to practical, up-to-date content and interactive sessions.
