The Office of the District Elementary Education in Assam has instructed all schools across the state to adjust their class timings due to the ongoing heatwave. As per the directive, all private, state, and central schools will now begin classes at 8 AM until further notice, according to ANI.

The notice, issued to all principals and headmasters of schools in Dibrugarh district affiliated with AHSEC, SEBA, ICSE, and CBSE, was made in consultation with the District Commissioner. It highlights the need for preventive measures to counter the effects of the heatwave. Schools in Kamrup metropolitan and Cachar districts have also modified their timings, with classes starting at 7:30 AM and ending by 12:30 PM, as reported by PTI.

Additionally, students have been advised to refrain from wearing waistcoats or ties, and morning assemblies are to be held inside classrooms. Schools have been directed to ensure sufficient drinking water, well-ventilated classrooms, functional fans, and backup power sources in case of outages. The district magistrate of Cachar, Mridul Yadav, emphasized the importance of these measures to protect students’ health and well-being during the heatwave.

In a related development, the Assam government has introduced the Assam State School Education Board Bill, 2024, in the Assembly. This bill aims to merge the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA), and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) to form a new entity, the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB), which will oversee the education system up to Class 12 in the state.
