A recent survey by Cambridge University Press and Assessment reveals that approximately 92% of students with Cambridge International AS & A Level qualifications transitioned to university in 2023. The survey included data from 372 Cambridge Schools, representing around 20,582 students across more than 160 countries.

Key Findings

  • Domestic vs. International Education: About 51% of students chose to study at universities in their home countries, while nearly 41% opted for institutions abroad.
  • Top Study Destinations: The most popular countries for students studying abroad included the UK, USA, Canada, and Australia, primarily due to factors like university reputation and job prospects. Australia was particularly noted for its value for money alongside future employment opportunities.
  • University Rankings: Notably, 66% of Cambridge students attended universities ranked in the global top 500, an increase from 61% in 2022.

Leading Global Universities

The top five universities where Cambridge students chose to study are:

  1. University College London
  2. University of Toronto
  3. The University of Manchester
  4. University of Melbourne
  5. Monash University
  6. University of Sydney

Alternative Pathways and Emerging Destinations

The survey also indicated a slight increase in the number of students (from 5% in 2022 to 8% in 2023) opting for alternative career paths instead of pursuing university education. Additionally, countries like the Netherlands have emerged as preferred study destinations for European students, with France becoming the third most popular choice among North American students.

Growing interest was observed in German and Dutch universities, particularly from international students outside Europe. Financial considerations played a significant role in decision-making, with many students prioritizing value for money when selecting universities in Australia and Canada.

Popular Fields of Study

The survey identified the following top subjects chosen by students:

  • Business and Management
  • Engineering
  • Computer Science/Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
  • Economics
  • Biological Sciences

There is also a rising interest in liberal arts and interdisciplinary studies, especially among schools in South Asia, indicating a shift from traditional STEM and business-focused education.

Recognition and Opportunities

Cambridge qualifications are widely recognized, accepted by over 2,376 universities worldwide. Almost 90% of surveyed schools reported that students’ university applications were based on Cambridge International A Levels, with a notable preference for Cambridge International AS Levels among North American applicants.

Kevin Ebenezer, Head of Global Recognitions at Cambridge International Education, emphasized the value of a Cambridge education in fostering critical and creative thinking, stating, “The data show how, together with the creative and critical thinking skills that are fostered through a Cambridge education, Cambridge International A and AS Levels continue to open doors to a world of opportunities.”
