CBSE Introduces Key Reforms for 2025-26 Academic Session

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced significant reforms for the 2025-26 academic session, aiming to modernize assessment methods, improve evaluation efficiency, and enhance the curriculum structure. These changes, confirmed during CBSE’s 140th governing body meeting, will impact students, teachers, and schools across India.

Key Reforms for the 2025-26 Session

Use of Calculators in Class 12 Accountancy

CBSE has approved the use of basic, non-programmable calculators in Class 12 accountancy exams. These calculators will only support fundamental functions like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentage calculations. Further guidelines on approved models will be issued to ensure uniformity and prevent the use of advanced devices. This decision aligns CBSE with international education standards and the National Education Policy (NEP), reducing cognitive strain while promoting analytical skills.

Introduction of Digital Evaluation with On-Screen Marking (OSM)

CBSE will introduce On-Screen Marking (OSM) for digital evaluation of answer sheets. Initially, this system will be implemented in selected subjects, allowing scanned answer sheets to be assessed digitally. The digital evaluation system is expected to:

  • Improve accuracy and efficiency in marking.
  • Speed up the result declaration process.
  • Reduce manual errors and inconsistencies.
    This system will be introduced for Classes 10 and 12, including supplementary and revaluation exams, starting from the 2024-25 academic session.

New Re-Evaluation Process for 2025 Board Exams

CBSE has revised its re-evaluation process to make it more transparent and student-friendly. Beginning with the 2025 board exams, students dissatisfied with their results will have a structured appeal process for re-evaluation, ensuring fairer assessment outcomes.

Changes in Vocational Subject Assessments

CBSE is restructuring its vocational subject assessments to align with industry standards. To ensure practical relevance, the board will collaborate with external agencies specializing in vocational education and skill development. The updated assessment methods will focus on industry-oriented evaluation techniques.

Standard and Advanced Exam Options for Class 10

Starting from the 2026-27 academic session, Class 10 students will have the option to choose between standard and advanced-level exams for science and social science subjects. Key aspects of this reform include:

  • Both exams will be conducted on the same day.
  • The advanced-level paper will have more complex questions and a longer duration.
  • Students can choose based on their academic strengths and future aspirations.
