CBSE Survey Reveals Challenges Faced by Parents in Children’s Academics and Behaviour
A recent survey conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) highlights the difficulties parents face in managing their children’s academic and behavioural issues. While a significant number of parents feel confident in guiding their children, a notable percentage struggle and require additional support.
The survey, aimed at improving the parent-child-school relationship, collected responses from 13,000 parents across the country. The results emphasize the need for better parental awareness, improved school support systems, and structured collaboration between educators and parents.
Key Findings of the CBSE Survey
Parents Struggling with Behavioural Challenges
The study indicates that 40.1% of parents face difficulties with their children’s behaviour, but 54.45% feel they can manage these challenges effectively. However, 5% of parents acknowledged that they need additional guidance in handling behavioural issues.
Academic Support and Confidence Levels
Regarding academics, 53.5% of parents feel confident in assisting their children with schoolwork, whereas 40.9% sometimes struggle to provide the necessary academic help. A further 5.65% expressed the need for extra support, highlighting gaps in parental ability to guide students effectively.
Parents’ Awareness and Concerns
Understanding Parenting Influence
The survey also assessed parental awareness regarding their role in their child’s overall development:
- 43.5% believe they fully understand the impact of their parenting decisions.
- 36.8% feel they need to learn more about effective parenting techniques.
- 19.7% admit that they are still navigating their parenting journey.
While academic success remains a top priority for most parents, many also acknowledge the significance of emotional and social development, indicating a broader perspective on child growth beyond school performance.
School Support and Parental Expectations
A key aspect of the survey was evaluating the support schools provide to parents:
- 49% of parents feel that schools offer adequate assistance in aligning parenting with education.
- 29.5% believe that more support is required from schools to help them in their parenting responsibilities.
When asked about preferred methods of collaboration, parents expressed different preferences:
- 32% prefer workshops and training programs to enhance parenting skills.
- 21.4% favor regular communication with teachers for better alignment on academic progress and behavioural concerns.
These findings suggest that structured parental engagement programs in schools can play a vital role in bridging the gap between home and school learning environments.
Key Areas Where Parents Seek Support
The survey also identified specific areas where parents feel they need additional guidance:
- 13.7% require academic assistance for their children.
- 12.3% need help in building children’s social skills.
- 12.15% seek guidance on patience and providing constructive feedback.
Other concerns include time management, developing good habits, communication strategies, and setting clear rules and boundaries for children.
Parental Support Needs by Age Group
The survey categorized the parenting challenges based on children’s age groups:
- Kindergarten (Pre-primary): Managing tantrums, emotional control, and building resilience.
- Grades 1-2: Encouraging a reading-friendly home, modeling empathy, and setting clear boundaries.
- Grades 3-5: Developing logical reasoning, decision-making skills, online safety awareness, and self-discipline.
- Grades 6-8: Addressing adolescence-related challenges, social influences, and cyberbullying concerns.
- Grades 9-12: Managing stress and distractions, discussing relationships and safety, and focusing on career planning.
These insights indicate a need for structured parental guidance programs tailored to different developmental stages, ensuring children receive age-appropriate support at home.
CBSE’s Objective: Strengthening Parent-School Collaboration
The CBSE survey was conducted to analyze parenting trends and identify areas where parents need better guidance and school cooperation. The findings highlight the importance of a collaborative approach, where both parents and schools work together to ensure the holistic development of children.
By addressing academic struggles, behavioural concerns, and emotional well-being, CBSE aims to foster a better learning environment for students while equipping parents with the necessary resources to support their children effectively.
The results emphasize that schools must take a more active role in guiding parents through workshops, interactive sessions, and personalized assistance, ensuring that every child receives the best possible support from both home and school.
