Chandigarh Seeks Change of CBSE Exam Centres Due to Easter Clash
The Chandigarh education department has requested the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to change the centres for the upcoming CBSE recruitment exam 2025. This request comes because the exam is set for April 20, 2025, which is also Easter Sunday, an important religious day for Christians.
Christian Schools May Not Be Available on Easter
In a letter to the CBSE regional officer, Director of School Education Harsuhinder Pal Singh Brar explained the situation. The exam is currently scheduled at three unaided Christian minority schools:
- Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sector 26
- Carmel Convent School, Sector 9
- St John High School, Sector 26
Brar mentioned that these schools may not be able to conduct the exam due to religious observances. Therefore, the department suggested that government schools in Chandigarh be used as alternative centres.
Officials Confident About Centre Shift
Brar said the department expects CBSE to approve the change. “We are positive about the outcome since we’ve already suggested alternative venues,” he added. According to him, there is no reason for CBSE to reject the proposal.
Schools Appeal to Union Minister
Along with the department’s request, the affected schools—including St Anne’s Convent School—also wrote to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. They requested that their schools be excused from hosting the exam on Easter.
In their appeal, the schools noted, “Easter is the most significant Christian festival, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It includes three days of solemn prayer services, ending on Easter Sunday.”
Final Decision Awaited
While CBSE has yet to respond, both the department and the schools remain hopeful. They believe that respecting religious sentiments and relocating the centres to nearby government schools is a practical and fair solution.
