The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has urged its affiliated schools to implement skill education initiatives urgently, aiming to prepare students for real-world challenges and future opportunities. The integration of vocational skills aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE).

Key Skill Subjects and Modules

  • Classes 6–8: Students can opt for 34 skill modules, including AI, IT, coding, financial literacy, pottery, Kashmiri embroidery, and baking. Assessments are project-based.
  • Classes 9–10: Students can choose from 22 skill subjects such as retail, multimedia, data science, and beauty and wellness. Skill subjects can replace one elective subject in board results if necessary.
  • Classes 11–12: A broader range of 43 skill subjects, including banking, marketing, insurance, air conditioning, and yoga, is available.

Each skill subject has a 100-mark weightage and is mapped to specific job roles to enhance employability.

NEP 2020 and Skill Education

Launched on July 29, 2020, NEP 2020 focuses on transforming India’s education system while preserving cultural roots. It emphasizes bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical application. Skill education under NEP 2020 fosters students’ readiness for future challenges, providing them with valuable insights into various industries.

Composite Skill Labs

To facilitate the implementation of skill education, CBSE directed schools to establish Composite Skill Labs. These labs provide hands-on training in areas such as tourism, IT, AI, and yoga, enhancing students’ exposure and employment prospects.

CBSE’s Role and Support

  • No fees are charged for offering skill modules or downloading certificates.
  • A dedicated portal allows registration and certification of students opting for skill modules.
  • Schools can customize offerings based on resources, ensuring flexibility in implementation.

Expert Opinion

Minakshi Kushwaha, Principal of Birla Vidya Niketan, highlighted that these initiatives expose students to various skills, enabling them to pursue higher education and careers in these areas.
