Eight Odisha Students Launch YTSAT 1.0 Satellite: A Milestone in STEM Education

In a groundbreaking achievement, eight talented students from government schools in Soro, Balasore, Odisha, successfully launched their can-sized satellite, YTSAT 1.0, on December 23, 2024. This historic event, part of Tinkerfest Soro, showcased the innovative spirit of these young minds and marked a significant milestone for STEM education in rural India.

The students—Digbijay Sahu (Lead), Rutuparna Jena (Parachute Lead), Satyajit Moharana (Structural Lead), Koushik Kar (Design Lead), Chiranjib Barik (3D Printing Lead), along with Jigyansa Sahu, Archana Jena, and Debasmita Barik—collaborated to design and launch the satellite using a helium balloon. “We wanted to show that innovation can come from anywhere,” said team lead Digbijay Sahu after the successful launch.

Empowering Rural Innovation

The YTSAT 1.0 project was supported by Tinker on Wheels (ToW), an advanced mobile prototyping lab aimed at fostering creativity and hands-on learning among students. The satellite launch demonstrated practical applications of science and technology, reinforcing the potential of rural youth in STEM fields.

As part of the project, the students also authored a research paper titled Cost-Efficient CanSat Design: Leveraging Indigenous Materials for Satellite Prototyping. This paper highlighted the use of sustainable materials in satellite construction, emphasizing cost efficiency and environmental consciousness.

Anil Pradhan, co-founder of the Young Tinker Foundation and mentor to the students, lauded their efforts. “This project is not just about launching a satellite; it’s about igniting a passion for science among our youth,” he stated. Pradhan, a recipient of the Rohini Nayyar Prize for his contributions to rural STEM education, has positively impacted over 2.5 lakh students through his initiatives.

Tinkerfest Soro provided a platform for students to explore and showcase their creativity across various disciplines. This year’s event was particularly significant due to the success of the YTSAT 1.0 launch, which inspired both participants and spectators.

Local officials expressed their pride and support for such initiatives, emphasizing the importance of promoting education in science and technology. “We are incredibly proud of these students and their achievements,” remarked a local government representative, adding that such projects empower youth and strengthen community development.
