Ericsson is significantly expanding its research and development (R&D) initiatives in India, concentrating on network application programming interfaces (APIs). This strategic move underscores the company’s commitment to improving network capabilities through standardization and collaboration with major local telecom operators, including Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio Infocomm. By partnering with these telecom giants, Ericsson aims to deliver APIs that leverage the advanced functionalities of telecommunications networks, especially in light of the global rollout of 5G technology.

Transforming Telecommunications with Network APIs

Network APIs play a crucial role in transforming traditional telecommunications networks into platforms that foster broader innovation. These APIs enable industries to access features like network slicing and quality on demand. Ericsson perceives programmable 5G standalone networks as a gateway to new opportunities for innovation and performance-based business models. The company’s objective is to cultivate an ecosystem that empowers developers to create and implement pioneering solutions.

The R&D efforts are centralized in India, particularly in the company’s centers located in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Gurugram. These centers focus on developing secure network interfaces while advancing use cases in device management, security, and fraud detection. Furthermore, Indian research teams are delving into advanced technologies, including intent-based networks, trustworthy AI, sustainable AI, and generative AI.

According to Andres Vicente, head of Southeast Asia, Oceania, and India at Ericsson, the company is intensifying its focus on AI, Network APIs, and Generative AI. Vicente stated, “The synergy of high-performance and programmable networks, combined with network APIs and a vibrant ecosystem of developers, will create a powerful network effect of growth and innovation.”

Incorporating AI into Telecommunications

A significant aspect of this initiative involves the integration of AI into Ericsson’s product offerings. The company has implemented AI-driven solutions in customer networks to enhance planning, deployment, and operational efficiency. Additionally, their generative AI platform, Ericsson Language Intelligence (ELI), utilizes large language models tailored for telecom applications, allowing engineers to interact with networks using natural language. This innovation streamlines processes such as network monitoring and troubleshooting.

The deployment of AI and generative AI also prioritizes enhancing network intelligence and energy efficiency. Demonstrations at the India Mobile Congress have showcased how these technologies can contribute to creating energy-efficient telecom networks. One notable concept is “brain-inspired AI,” which aims to significantly reduce AI compute energy consumption.

Moreover, Ericsson has demonstrated the application of AI and robotics, integrated with 5G, to improve safety measures in enterprises, such as fire hazard prevention. Recent demonstrations highlighted 5G applications for consumers, businesses, and the advancements leading towards 6G technology.
