On Saturday, former ISRO Chairperson K Radhakrishnan commended the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, calling it a transformative initiative for higher education in India. Speaking as the chief guest at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) Vijayadashami event in Nagpur, Radhakrishnan lauded the NEP’s focus on innovation, research, and internationalisation of Indian education.
Highlighting the importance of mentoring younger generations, Radhakrishnan said the NEP is helping India advance towards significant milestones, including the creation of a Bharatiya Space Station by 2040. He emphasised that the policy is driving a positive transition in higher education, fostering a research-centric environment and strengthening India’s global academic presence.
Radhakrishnan noted the expansion of Indian educational institutions abroad, which he believes is broadening the global reach of India’s education system. He praised the NEP for enhancing research capabilities within Indian universities, enabling them to compete globally in fields such as science and technology. The policy’s emphasis on research, particularly through initiatives like the Anusandhan Research Foundation, aims to elevate India’s status in scientific advancements.
Despite criticism from opposition parties and sections of the intelligentsia accusing the NEP of promoting a “saffronisation” agenda, Radhakrishnan endorsed the policy’s long-term benefits for India’s education and research landscape, positioning the country for future success in academia and innovation.
