Lombard, IL — Parents of students at Glenbard East High School have raised alarms about safety after three significant security incidents occurred within just two weeks, prompting calls for increased security measures at the school.
Kirsten Friedrichs, a parent of a current student and two former students, expressed her anxiety, stating, “Our kids can’t learn in this kind of environment. It makes you nervous.” She added that she now tells her daughter, “I love you,” every morning before dropping her off, reflecting her concerns about her child’s safety.
The first incident took place on September 10 when a gun was discovered in the boys’ bathroom, leading to heightened police presence and the arrest of a 14-year-old boy facing felony charges. Shortly after, a visitor made a remark about possessing a concealed carry license, and although no direct threat was issued, authorities found a gun in the individual’s car. The situation escalated on Friday when social media threats prompted the school to go into a secure status, restricting entry and exit from the building.
In response to these incidents, the school has implemented several changes to its security measures, including prohibiting backpacks at football games and allowing searches of purses. Attendees are also not permitted to re-enter the stadium once they leave.
However, many parents feel these measures are insufficient. Friedrichs suggested, “As sad as it is, I would not be opposed to metal detectors or some sort of metal detector wand. Lines may be longer to get into school in the morning, but at least I would know no one is carrying on the premises.” Parents have initiated a petition advocating for these additional security measures.
Glenbard District 87 Superintendent David Larson acknowledged the community’s concerns, stating, “With recent incidents, we understand it has been an emotional and stressful time for students, staff, and families. The safety of our students and staff continues to be our top priority.” He expressed gratitude to school leaders and staff for their vigilance and adherence to safety protocols, asserting confidence in the district’s overall safety plan while acknowledging the need for continual enhancements.
Parents plan to address their safety concerns during the Glenbard Township High School District 87 board meeting scheduled for Monday night.
