Students at Gresham High School in Oregon are organizing a walkout on Thursday, October 3, to protest ongoing safety concerns after a September incident involving a student carrying a loaded gun on campus. The protest aims to raise awareness about the school’s response to safety threats and the perceived lack of adequate precautions.
The incident occurred on September 20, when authorities reported that a 17-year-old student had brought a firearm into the school following a threat made at a nearby transit center. A concerned passenger alerted the police, who confirmed that the student had the weapon. Fortunately, no shots were fired, and the student was detained by school staff in a secure area.
Following the incident, students and faculty voiced their concerns about the school administration’s response, claiming it failed to take the threat seriously. Matt Wallace, President of the Gresham-Barlow Education Association, criticized the administration’s reaction, stating that it appeared they hoped the situation was untrue rather than taking immediate and effective action. Wallace also noted that weapons, particularly knives, are confiscated from students at Gresham High School “at least monthly,” emphasizing that teachers should not be responsible for disarming students.
In May 2024, staff members at Gresham High School expressed a vote of no confidence in Principal Erika Whitlock and the Central Office Administration, citing failures to support students and staff amid growing safety concerns. They allege that a “lack of transparency” from administrators has exacerbated the situation.
In an Instagram post from the student-led “Gresham Student Union,” details about the planned walkout were shared, urging students to participate.
In response to these allegations, the Gresham-Barlow School District issued a statement expressing gratitude to the building administration and campus monitors for their swift actions in identifying the armed student and ensuring safety. The district emphasized its commitment to reviewing safety protocols after incidents and working collaboratively with students, staff, and families to enhance school safety.
