Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, IIT Jodhpur has joined the ranks of higher education institutions (HEIs) offering BTech courses in Hindi. The institute announced on Tuesday that it will begin offering BTech courses in Hindi from the upcoming academic session. This initiative addresses the barriers students face due to limited English language skills. Prior to this, IIT-BHU was the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to start Hindi as the medium of instruction for BTech courses.
Implementation Plan
IIT Jodhpur will start by teaching BTech first-year courses in both English and Hindi. The institute plans to introduce two sections for first-year students, allowing them to choose their preferred language of instruction.
“The Ministry of Education is pleased to share that @iitjodhpur will now offer B. Tech 1st year courses in both Hindi and English, beginning this academic year! This initiative is designed to ensure all students can learn effectively in the language they are most comfortable with. Both sections will be taught by the same instructor, maintaining consistency and quality. This is a significant step towards fostering a more inclusive and supportive educational environment at IIT Jodhpur,” reads the Ministry of Education notification on X (formerly Twitter).
Official Statements
The Senate at IIT Jodhpur recently approved the proposal to teach courses in Hindi and English. According to a statement from the institute, “The Senate noted that IIT-Jodhpur, being at the forefront of technology, science, humanities, and management, is expected to impart education in the native language to help students who face challenges in learning due to inadequacy in English proficiency.”
Officials at the institute have assured that the same faculty will teach first-year courses in both English and Hindi sections, maintaining the same academic rigor in curriculum delivery. Admission to the program in Hindi will be based on the Joint Entrance Examination Advanced (JEE Advanced 2024) score.
NEP 2020 and Inclusive Education
The move to introduce BTech courses in Hindi aligns with NEP 2020, which aims to make learning more inclusive and accessible. In accordance with NEP 2020, several states have also introduced or are planning to launch medical and engineering courses in Hindi. This initiative by IIT Jodhpur is a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and supportive educational environment for students who are more comfortable learning in their native language.
