The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has received its largest single donation ever, amounting to Rs. 228 crore, from distinguished alumnus Dr. Krishna Chivukula, an MTech graduate from the class of 1970. This substantial contribution ranks among the largest donations ever made to an educational institution in India.
To honor Dr. Chivukula’s generosity, IIT Madras has named a new academic building the ‘Krishna Chivukula Block’. A dedication ceremony for the building was held on August 6. The donation will fund various initiatives, including scholarships for international students, an undergraduate fellowship program, a sports scholarship program, a Research Excellence Grant Program, the creation of Shaastra Magazine, and the maintenance of the Krishna Chivukula Block.
Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, expressed profound gratitude, stating, “Our alumnus’s enduring support underscores that education is the most enduring legacy we can offer. We are deeply appreciative of Shri Krishna Chivukula’s monumental contribution, which will support many future generations of students.”
Dr. Chivukula, founder and CEO of Indo-MIM, reflected on his journey, saying, “My education at IIT Madras was both memorable and impactful, enabling me to achieve significant milestones in my career. This donation is my way of giving back to the institution that played a crucial role in my success.”
In 1997, Dr. Chivukula introduced Metal Injection Moulding (MIM) technology to India. His company, INDO US MIM Tec, has become a global leader in MIM technology, with a forecast revenue of approximately Rs. 1,000 crore. In recognition of his professional achievements and community contributions, IIT Madras awarded him the ‘Distinguished Alumnus Award’ in 2015.
