New Delhi, January 20, 2025 – In a significant milestone for India-South Korea relations, the Government of India and the Republic of Korea signed an Exchange of Notes for a technical cooperation project titled “Strengthening Vocational Education and Training in Mechatronics in India.” The project aims to empower India’s youth by equipping them with the skills necessary for success in Industry 4.0.
Mechatronics, a multidisciplinary field combining mechanical engineering, electronics, computing, and control engineering, plays a crucial role in industries such as manufacturing, robotics, automotive, and consumer electronics. This project, supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), marks the first collaboration with KOICA’s assistance in India.
The project is designed to be implemented over the next two years, focusing on the development of vocational education and training in mechatronics. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will pilot the initiative at the Regional Institute of Education (RIE) in Bhopal, providing a robust framework for mechatronics education.
Empowering India’s Youth with Mechatronics
Key components of the project include the creation of specialized curriculum, textbooks, and teacher manuals tailored for mechatronics. The initiative will also provide cutting-edge equipment to RIE Bhopal, ensuring a state-of-the-art learning environment. Capacity-building programs for teachers will equip educators with the knowledge and skills needed to teach in this rapidly evolving field.
The project is aimed at creating pathways for students to gain practical exposure and hands-on training by fostering collaboration between RIE Bhopal and industry partners. This collaboration is intended to enhance the employability of students in automation, robotics, and precision engineering sectors, which are pivotal to Industry 4.0.
Strengthening India-South Korea Relations
The signing ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including Manisha Sinha, Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, and Lee Seong-ho, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to India. Ambassador Lee highlighted the importance of this collaboration, emphasizing that it marks a new chapter in the India-Korea partnership. “By integrating technical training with education, we aim to equip Indian youth with the skills required to thrive in Industry 4.0,” he said.
The initiative is a direct outcome of South Korea’s designation as India’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) partner in 2016, leading to initiatives aimed at sustainable development, skill enhancement, and technological advancement in India.

The project also aligns with India’s Skill India initiative, which aims to transform India into the skill capital of the world.
