The Board of Directors of Indian Schools Oman has announced the implementation of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 across all its schools. This change marks a shift to the 5+3+3+4 academic structure, emphasizing holistic child development and a phased educational approach.
Foundational Stage Redefined
- New Structure:
- Foundational Stage (3–8 years): Includes a three-year Kindergarten (Balvatika) for children aged 3–6, followed by Classes 1 and 2 for ages 6–8.
- Preparatory Stage (8–11 years): Covers Classes 3 to 5.
- Middle Stage (11–14 years): Encompasses Classes 6 to 8.
- Secondary Stage (14–18 years): Comprises Classes 9 to 12.
Introduction of Balvatika
Indian Schools in Oman will introduce Balvatika as part of the Foundational Stage in the 2025–2026 academic year, starting April 1, 2025. This will replace the current two-year kindergarten program with a three-year structure.
- Age Criteria for Admission (as of March 31, 2025):
- Balvatika: 3–4 years
- KG I: 4–5 years
- KG II: 5–6 years
- Class I: 6–7 years
Curriculum Aligned with NCF-FS 2022
The curriculum for Balvatika aligns with the National Curriculum Framework for Foundational Stages (NCF-FS) 2022, focusing on five key areas of child development:
- Physical and motor skills
- Cognitive and intellectual growth
- Language and communication
- Social and emotional well-being
- Creative expression and aesthetic appreciation
Key Features and Policies
- Admissions for interschool transfers require valid Transfer Certificates.
- Existing promotion policies for students from KG I to KG II and KG II to Class I will remain unchanged.
- The new structure formalizes education for children aged 3–8, fostering creativity, discovery, and holistic growth.
