Amid the ongoing uncertainty over the declaration of the CUET-UG results, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is contemplating an alternative strategy for its undergraduate admissions this year. An official announced on Tuesday that the university is set to hold a meeting with the deans of all schools on Thursday to discuss potential solutions and expedite the admission process.

Unlike other central universities in Delhi, such as Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi University (DU), which have fully implemented the Common University Entrance Examination (CUET) for both undergraduate and postgraduate admissions, JMI has only partially adopted this system. Currently, JMI accepts CUET scores for admissions into 15 out of its 50 undergraduate courses and five out of its 86 master’s programs.

Meeting to Devise Strategy

Mohammad Shakeel, the officiating Vice-Chancellor of JMI, will chair a meeting on July 18 to discuss how to proceed with the admissions process given the delays in CUET-UG result announcements. The goal is to develop a plan that allows the university to begin its academic session without further delay.

CUET-UG Result Delays

The National Testing Agency (NTA) announced a re-test for over 1,000 CUET-UG candidates on July 19 due to various complaints, including the distribution of incorrect question papers. Despite this, there has been no clear communication regarding the release of the results, which were originally scheduled for June 30 and have now been delayed by over two weeks. This delay has impacted the admission timelines of several universities in Delhi that rely on CUET scores.

Impact on Academic Sessions

The delay in results has caused significant disruptions in the academic schedules of universities that depend on CUET for admissions, with the academic session initially slated to begin on August 1. To mitigate the effects of this delay, universities such as JNU and Ambedkar University are planning to hold extra classes during evenings and weekends and may also shorten their winter breaks to cover the syllabus.

NTA Under Scrutiny

The NTA is currently under scrutiny for alleged irregularities in the competitive exams it conducts, including NEET-UG and UGC NET. The agency’s handling of these exams has raised concerns among stakeholders about the efficiency and reliability of the processes involved.

Conclusion

As Jamia Millia Islamia navigates these challenges, the upcoming meeting with deans will be crucial in determining the next steps for the university’s admission process. The situation underscores the broader issues faced by educational institutions amid administrative delays and the need for effective contingency planning to ensure academic continuity.
