Karnataka has recorded the second-highest primary education enrollment rate in India, following Tripura, according to the Comprehensive Annual Modular Survey 2022-23, released by the Union Ministry of Statistics. The report, covering the period from July 2022 to June 2023, highlights that 97.4% of children aged 6 to 10 years in Karnataka are enrolled in grades 1 to 5, while Tripura leads with a 97.9% enrollment rate.

The report credits Karnataka’s strong enrollment numbers to several government initiatives, including:

- Free distribution of textbooks, uniforms, and shoes

The survey also highlights the distribution of students across different types of schools:
- 64.4% of students attend government schools
- 25.2% are enrolled in private schools
- 10.1% study in aided schools
Rural-Urban Divide and Gender Disparities
The report indicates a notable rural-urban divide in school enrollment:
- In rural areas, 17% of boys and 13% of girls attend private schools, showing a preference for government institutions.
- In urban areas, 46% of both boys and girls are enrolled in private schools, reflecting better access and higher demand for private education.

A Karnataka education department official emphasized the government’s role in improving primary school enrollment. He highlighted efforts such as:
