In a gesture of respect for Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, the Karnataka government has announced a public holiday for all schools, colleges, government offices, and state-affiliated institutions on Friday, December 27, 2024. Dr. Singh passed away on Thursday at AIIMS Delhi due to age-related health conditions.

Seven-Day Mourning Period

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah declared a seven-day mourning period from December 26, 2024, to January 1, 2025. During this time, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast across all government buildings, and public entertainment events are prohibited statewide.

Dr. Manmohan Singh’s Legacy

Born in 1932, Dr. Manmohan Singh was known for his monumental contributions to India’s economy and leadership. As India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, he spearheaded economic reforms, international collaborations, and social welfare initiatives. His tenure was marked by notable achievements like the civil nuclear agreement with the United States.

Prior to becoming Prime Minister, Dr. Singh served as India’s Finance Minister, where he implemented liberalization policies that propelled the nation toward economic growth.

Karnataka Leaders Pay Tribute

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his condolences, calling Dr. Singh a “statesman of unparalleled wisdom” whose leadership significantly impacted India. Reflecting on his tenure, Siddaramaiah recalled how Singh supported Karnataka’s welfare initiatives during his time as Prime Minister.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar described Dr. Singh as a leader who embodied integrity and resilience. “His passing feels like a personal loss, not only for me but for the entire nation,” Shivakumar said.

Congress Cancels Events

The Indian National Congress (INC) has also canceled various events, including the “Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan Rally” scheduled for December 27 in Belgaum, Karnataka. A condolence meeting will instead be held to honor Dr. Singh’s memory.

Key Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, departed for Delhi following the news of Dr. Singh’s demise to pay their respects.

Nationwide Impact on Schools

Dr. Singh’s death has drawn responses nationwide, with various states joining Karnataka in mourning. Schools and educational institutions have been encouraged to reflect on his contributions to education and economic reform.
