Tamil Nadu Minister for Higher Education Govi Chezhiaan has assured that all Kashmiri students studying in institutions across the state are safe. Speaking to The New Indian Express, the minister confirmed that proactive steps have been taken to ensure the protection and well-being of students from Kashmir, amid concerns following the Pahalgam terror attack.

Despite reports of Kashmiri students facing physical attacks and threats in other parts of the country, students in Tamil Nadu stated that they feel protected and are being treated with dignity and respect. According to Nasir Khuehami, the national convenor of the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association, there have been no distress calls or complaints from students in Tamil Nadu. He highlighted that Kashmiri students are in regular contact with the Chief Minister’s Office in Srinagar, which is closely coordinating with Tamil Nadu authorities to monitor the situation.

“We did not receive any reports of harassment by right-wing groups or any other individuals in Tamil Nadu,” said Khuehami. “Unlike in other places where Kashmiri students sometimes have to prove their nationalism, here we are treated with dignity, without prejudice.”

Minister Govi Chezhiaan emphasized that the state government remains vigilant to any potential issues. “We have instructed colleges to report any untoward incidents immediately. District collectors have also been directed to take cognisance of the situation. Even minor threats will be addressed with immediate action to ensure the students’ security,” he said.

The minister’s reassurances come at a time when the safety of Kashmiri students studying outside their home state has become a national concern. Tamil Nadu’s proactive response underscores its commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for students from all parts of India.

In a related note regarding visa regulations, officials stated that diplomatic and official visas will remain valid, with the Ministry of External Affairs deciding deadlines for exit if necessary. Long-term visas issued to Pakistani citizens will also continue without restrictions, and new diplomatic, official, or long-term visas will still be issued as per guidelines.

The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have pledged to take swift action should any concerns arise.

For further updates, students and institutions are advised to stay connected with official government channels.
