Kerala Government Announces Overhaul of Public Education

The Kerala government has unveiled a statewide “Comprehensive Quality Improvement” initiative, aimed at transforming government schools into centres of excellence. Announced by General Education Minister V Sivankutty, the programme is set to be implemented in the next academic year, with the official launch by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on February 18.

Minister Sivankutty emphasized that enhancing education quality requires more than syllabus or textbook reforms—it demands effective teaching methods, improved evaluation systems, and better administrative coordination.

Key Features of the Comprehensive Quality Improvement Initiative

  • Ensuring effective implementation of curriculum changes

📌 Technology Integration:

  • Expanding digital and smart classrooms
  • Upgrading school infrastructure for better learning environments

📌 Teacher Training & Development:

  • Organizing vacation teacher communion sessions for skill enhancement
  • Familiarizing teachers with revised curriculum and textbooks

📌 Administrative and Policy Enhancements:

  • Strengthening department coordination for smooth execution
  • Ensuring minimum pass percentage for each subject in higher classes

Strict Regulations on School Admissions and Fees

Minister Sivankutty reiterated the government’s commitment to free and equitable education:

  • Exams and interviews for Class 1 admissions are banned, as they are deemed cruel to children.
  • No school can collect additional or unlisted fees from students in Classes 1 to 8.
  • Fees for Classes 8 to 12 must adhere to government regulations.

Distribution of Updated Textbooks

  • Class 10 textbooks for the next academic year will be distributed by March-end.
  • Textbooks for other classes will be issued in May.

Objective: Excellence in National-Level Exams

The initiative aims to equip students with strong academic skills to help them perform well in national competitive exams. With a focus on quality teaching, updated curriculum, and digital transformation, the Kerala government seeks to set a new benchmark in public education.
