Maharashtra is set to announce its Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy in April, aiming to integrate AI into education while addressing potential risks. IT Minister Ashish Shelar informed the legislative council on Thursday that the policy aligns with India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, where AI is viewed as a complementary tool rather than an alternative to traditional education.
AI’s Role in Maharashtra’s Education System
Several schools in Maharashtra have already adopted AI-based methodologies, reflecting the growing influence of technology in education. However, concerns regarding AI’s impact on the education system were raised by BJP MLA Shrikant Bharatiya under legislative council rule 97. MLAs Anil Parab, Amit Gorakhe, Amol Mitkari, and Shashikant Shinde also participated in the discussion.
Addressing these concerns, Shelar emphasized that AI is rapidly transforming global industries, creating new employment opportunities while also raising apprehensions about job displacement. Maharashtra’s AI policy aims to ensure a balanced approach that maximizes benefits while mitigating risks.
Key Focus Areas of Maharashtra’s AI Policy
A committee of experts has been established to draft the policy, with ongoing discussions shaping its framework. The policy will focus on:
- AI’s Role in Education: Enhancing learning outcomes through AI-driven tools and methodologies.
- Cyber Security: Safeguarding student data and digital learning platforms.
- Employment Considerations: Addressing concerns related to job displacement by fostering AI-driven skill development.
Maharashtra Leads in AI Policy Development
Maharashtra is the first state in India to develop a dedicated AI policy, aligning with the national vision set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This policy aims to position the state as a leader in technological advancement while ensuring responsible AI integration in education and other sectors.
With expert committees guiding its formulation, Maharashtra’s AI policy will establish a framework that balances innovation with security, making it a model for other states to follow.
