The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has approved a new curriculum framework for grades 3 to 12, closely aligning with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) syllabus. This shift, based on the National Education Policy (NEP), is intended to streamline educational standards across the state and offers students broader subject choices.

Key Curriculum Updates and Structure

The revised curriculum, developed by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), integrates elements of India’s traditional knowledge system to help students connect with cultural heritage. One major shift includes removing the stream-based system, allowing students greater flexibility to select subjects based on their interests. To further enrich the learning experience, art and physical education will be part of the curriculum, providing a more holistic approach.

Textbook and Language Adaptations

Following the CBSE model, the state board will adopt the majority of the CBSE curriculum with textbooks from NCERT and CBSE available in English and Hindi. The task of translating these textbooks into additional languages will be handled by Balbharati, while Marathi textbooks will be independently developed to ensure language accessibility across the state.

Transition to a CBSE Academic Schedule

Historically, Maharashtra state board schools have operated on a June-to-April calendar, beginning classes on June 15, except in the Vidarbha region. The new framework proposes shifting the academic calendar to April-to-March, aligning with the CBSE’s schedule. Although initial discussions suggested maintaining the traditional calendar, the proposal now indicates a move toward CBSE’s annual schedule. This change aims to unify the academic calendar for schools across Maharashtra, although concerns about the impact of this transition have been raised.

Flexible School Timings and Shifts

The proposal also introduces recommendations for schools operating in multiple shifts. To maximize educational efficiency, it suggests scheduling classes for older students in the morning while holding sessions for younger students in the afternoon.

Looking Ahead

This new curriculum framework represents a significant step toward modernizing Maharashtra’s educational system, ensuring uniformity with national standards and expanding educational opportunities for students. As the framework is implemented, the state will monitor feedback to address any emerging challenges.
