The Maharashtra government has launched a major initiative to modernise technical education and enhance employment opportunities by upgrading 20 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the state. This initiative includes the establishment of advanced laboratories, special training programmes in Bengaluru, and support for differently-abled students.
Key MoUs Signed to Boost Skill Development
In the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the state’s Department of Skill, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation signed three key Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with leading social sector organisations:
- Shri Shri Rural Development Program Trust (Bengaluru)
- Schneider Electric India Foundation (Bengaluru)
- DeAsra Foundation (Pune)
- Project Mumbai (Andheri, Mumbai)
The MoU ceremony was held at Mantralaya, following a state cabinet meeting. Senior officials including Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, Skill Development Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, and Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik were also present.
Bengaluru-Based Industrial Training for ITI Students
A tripartite agreement between Shri Shri Rural Development Trust, Schneider Electric India Foundation, and the Directorate of Vocational Education & Training will lead to the modernisation of electrical workshops in 20 ITIs. The plan includes:
- Establishing solar technician and industrial automation labs
- Providing 15-day training in Bengaluru on advanced technologies and soft skills for selected electrician trade students
- Benefiting 9,750 youth over four years across divisions of Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Amravati, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
Support for Entrepreneurs and Differently-Abled Students
As part of the broader skill development push:
- The Maharashtra Innovation Society signed an MoU with the DeAsra Foundation to train and mentor 5,000 micro and small entrepreneurs through capacity-building programmes in various districts.
- An MoU with Project Mumbai will focus on inclusive vocational education for differently-abled ITI students. Key features include:
- Indian Sign Language-based curriculum
- On-the-job training opportunities for better workforce integration
These initiatives are part of Maharashtra’s ongoing effort to create a future-ready skilled workforce and promote inclusive technical education aligned with evolving industry demands.
