The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) is the gateway for students aspiring to pursue medical courses in India. Each year, this examination witnesses intense competition among lakhs of candidates vying for a limited number of seats.

Key Statistics for NEET UG 2024:

  • Applications and Attendance: In 2024, a total of 24,06,079 candidates applied for NEET UG. Out of these, 23,33,297 appeared for the exam. The number of students who passed the exam stands at 13,16,268.
  • MBBS Seats: The total number of MBBS seats in India has seen a significant increase, reaching 112,000 in 2024. This marks a substantial rise from the previous total of 51,384 seats. The increase is attributed to the growth in medical colleges across the country, which have expanded from 387 in 2017 to 731 in 2024.
  • Competition Ratio: Despite the increase in seat numbers, the competition remains fierce. With 13 lakh candidates competing for 1.12 lakh seats, there are approximately 8 to 9 candidates for every MBBS seat. This high competition underscores the rigorous journey students face in their pursuit of a medical career.

The journey to medical school continues to be highly competitive, with many aspiring doctors facing significant challenges to secure a seat. Even with the growth in the number of MBBS seats, the demand for medical education far exceeds the available opportunities, reflecting the ongoing intensity of the competition.
