The National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 has shown positive outcomes over the last five years by creating diverse career opportunities for India’s youth, according to T.V. Kattimani, Vice Chancellor of Central Tribal University of Andhra Pradesh and a member of the NEP-2020 Drafting and Implementation Committees.
Dr. Kattimani emphasized that 65% of India’s population is under 35 years old, making employment and quality education critical. To tackle this challenge, the K. Kasturirangan-led NEP Drafting Committee developed a transformative policy aimed at equipping youth with multiple skills, making them valuable assets to the economy.
Multi-Disciplinary Learning: A Key Feature of NEP-2020
Highlighting the policy’s impact, Dr. Kattimani stated that NEP-2020 allows students to pursue multi-disciplinary education, moving beyond rigid streams of arts, science, and medicine. This flexibility helps students:
- Develop diverse skill sets
- Explore multiple job opportunities
- Reduce unemployment rates in the long run
He urged state governments to fully implement NEP-2020, ensuring that students maximize its benefits.
Future Plans for NEP-2020 Implementation
Dr. Kattimani, along with three other NEP Drafting Committee members, will soon present a report to the Union government, incorporating feedback from states and academia. This will aid in refining and enhancing the policy’s effectiveness.
With its focus on skill development and career flexibility, NEP-2020 is set to transform India’s education system, fostering a workforce ready for modern job markets.
