DESAM Demands Full Implementation of NEP 2020 in Manipur

Imphal, Manipur — The Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) organized a protest rally on Monday afternoon, demanding the full implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 across the state. The student-led rally sought to highlight growing concerns over the lack of clarity and action from the state government regarding the rollout of NEP-based academic reforms.

Protest March Halted, Delegation Meets Officials

The rally began at DESAM’s headquarters on Sega Road and moved toward Raj Bhavan. Students marched with placards and raised slogans urging the government to act swiftly. The protest was intercepted by Manipur police near Keishampat Bridge. Following a brief standoff, a delegation of DESAM leaders was permitted to proceed and meet government officials after receiving clearance from higher authorities.

Uncertainty Over UG Semesters Under NEP

DESAM President M. Somorjit spoke to the media during the rally, expressing frustration over the ambiguous implementation of NEP 2020 in the state. He highlighted that students currently preparing for their 6th Semester undergraduate examinations, starting June 13, have no official syllabus or guidelines for their upcoming 7th and 8th Semesters under the four-year programme introduced by NEP 2020.

“It is unclear whether NEP 2020 is actually being implemented or not. The government must make its stand clear,” Somorjit stated.

Lack of Transparency and Government Response

According to DESAM, although NEP 2020 was partially introduced in 2022–23, there has been no official declaration of curriculum changes or identification of institutions equipped to deliver the new academic structure. The student body emphasized that they have submitted multiple memorandums to the Director and Commissioner of the Education Department, yet have received no substantial response.

Call for Immediate Clarification

DESAM urged the state government to issue a clear and official statement regarding the status of NEP 2020’s implementation. The organization stressed the urgency of resolving the issue to protect the academic interests of thousands of students who are currently in a state of confusion.

The student body warned that if their demands continue to be ignored, they may intensify their protest efforts in the coming weeks.
