The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services exam is famously challenging, with only a select few passing on their first attempt. Pranabjyoti Nath, a 2005 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, is one such individual who has risen to prominence through his distinguished career. Currently appointed as Kerala’s new Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) by the Election Commission of India (ECI), Nath brings a wealth of experience from previous roles, including Secretary of Kerala’s Sports and Youth Affairs Department.

Career Milestones

  • Early Career: Nath began his career as a Sub-Collector and Sub-Divisional Magistrate in Thiruvalla, Pathanamthitta, followed by a similar position in Devikulam, Idukki District.
  • District Collector: He later became the District Collector and District Magistrate in Thiruvalla and Kollam, showcasing leadership in managing regional governance.
  • Sports and Youth Affairs: As Secretary of Kerala’s Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Nath contributed significantly to youth development and sports programs in the state.

Recent Appointments and Dual Roles

On the same day as his CEO appointment, Nath was also named Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) of NALCO in Bhubaneswar by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), with approval from the Cabinet’s Appointments Committee. This role as CVO is set for a three-year period, and Nath will assume it following his responsibilities in the upcoming Kerala by-elections.

Education and Background

Pranabjyoti Nath’s academic journey is equally noteworthy:

  • Early Education: A native of Guwahati, Assam, Nath completed primary education at Rupnagar Lower Primary School and middle school at Rupnagar ME School.
  • Higher Secondary and College: He attended Ulubari Higher Secondary School for his 10th grade and pursued an Arts stream at Cotton College in Guwahati, where he completed his BSc.
  • Advanced Studies: Nath holds a Master’s degree in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where he also cleared the UGC NET exam, further bolstering his academic profile.
