President Droupadi Murmu emphasized the cultural connections between India and Mauritania during her address to the Indian community in Nouakchott, Mauritania’s capital, on Wednesday. This historic visit, the first by an Indian President to the West African nation, is set to strengthen bilateral relations across various sectors.

President Murmu pointed out shared cultural traits such as traditional women’s clothing, respect for ancestors, and strong family values that unite the two nations. She expressed optimism about India’s role in Mauritania’s development, particularly in areas like agriculture, health, education, and skill development.

“India can contribute to Mauritania’s journey through human resource development, infrastructure, agriculture, health, education, skill development, and digital innovation. All of you are an important part of this cooperation,” said President Murmu.

The visit comes as part of her three-nation tour, which includes Algeria, Mauritania, and Malawi. During her stay in Mauritania, she also met with Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, to discuss further opportunities for collaboration.

As India moves towards its goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047, President Murmu acknowledged the vital role that overseas Indian communities play in this ambitious endeavor. This visit marks a significant milestone in fostering closer ties between India and Mauritania, with promises of cooperation in multiple areas that will benefit both nations.
