More than 1.55 lakh candidates have applied for the Prime Minister Internship Scheme as of Sunday, October 13, surpassing the initial target of 1.25 lakh registrations. The dedicated portal for the scheme, managed by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, went live for registration at 5:00 p.m. on October 12, 2024.

The scheme is open to applicants aged 21-24, and the internships will commence on December 2, 2024. Selected interns will receive a monthly financial assistance of ₹5,000 for 12 months, along with a one-time grant of ₹6,000.

The initiative, introduced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget 2024, is designed to provide young individuals with hands-on experience in India’s top 500 companies across various sectors. The pilot project, estimated to cost ₹800 crore, offers more than 80,000 internship opportunities across 24 sectors, including oil, gas, energy, travel, hospitality, and automotive industries.

With Aadhaar-based registration and features such as bio-data generation, the scheme aims to ensure efficient access to internships for eligible candidates, helping bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical industry experience.
