Silver Spring, MD — Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews responded to a two-alarm fire at the former JoAnn Leleck Elementary School site in Broad Acres on Tuesday night. Firefighters reported seeing smoke emerging from the attic, indicating a significant fire situation.

Public radio transmissions captured one firefighter stating, “I have smoke coming out of the attic. It’s definitely on fire.” As flames vented from the roof, accessing the fire proved challenging, necessitating aerial operations. MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer shared on social media that approximately 75 firefighters were deployed to tackle the blaze.

The incident occurred at the school’s previous location on Beacon Road, which is currently undergoing demolition and replacement with a new building. The new JoAnn Leleck Elementary School is located at 13313 Old Columbia Pike in Silver Spring, as noted on the school’s website.
