The University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced guidelines for Apprenticeship-Embedded Degree Programmes (AEDP), aiming to align higher education with industry demands by integrating practical training into academic courses. These programmes will launch in Indian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) during the January-February 2025 admission cycle, offering a critical step toward improving the employability of graduates.
Bridging Education and Industry Demands
The AEDP aims to address the ongoing challenge of employability in India, where many graduates lack the skills needed to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving job market. This innovative programme allows students to gain hands-on experience while earning their degrees, ensuring they graduate with the practical skills necessary for the workplace. By combining academic knowledge with industry-relevant training, AEDP offers a more comprehensive and practical learning experience, setting a new standard for higher education in India.
Apprenticeship-Embedded Learning
A key feature of AEDP is the integration of apprenticeships into the academic curriculum. Under the UGC’s guidelines, students will spend at least one semester (6 months) in an apprenticeship, which will count towards their degree. This on-the-job training will be evaluated and credited in line with the National Credit Framework (NCF), with 30 hours of training equating to 1 academic credit. This structure ensures that students receive formal recognition for their apprenticeship experience.
To support students financially, stipends will be provided under the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS), easing the financial burden and encouraging more students to take advantage of these opportunities.
Tripartite Agreement and Industry Collaboration
To ensure a structured apprenticeship experience, AEDP will operate under a tripartite agreement between the HEI, the industry partner, and the student. This agreement outlines the roles and responsibilities of each party, ensuring accountability throughout the training period. Industry partners will actively participate in curriculum development, offering real-world insight and helping shape courses to meet the needs of modern industries.
Flexibility and Innovation in Curriculum Design
The UGC has granted HEIs significant flexibility in designing AEDP courses, allowing institutions to create tailored programmes that align with industry-specific needs. This flexibility extends to credit transfers, enabling students to switch institutions or specialisations without losing academic progress. HEIs accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) or ranked under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) will be eligible to offer AEDP courses, ensuring that only high-quality institutions participate in the programme.
Telangana’s Alignment with Skill-Based Education
The UGC’s initiative complements Telangana’s ongoing efforts to advance skill-based education. The state’s transformation of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) into Advanced Technology Centres (ATCs) and the establishment of Young India Skill University (YISU) reinforce its commitment to building a skilled workforce. The integration of AEDP courses further strengthens Telangana’s strategy by combining academic education with skill-based training.
Future Prospects and Impact
The introduction of AEDP marks a major shift in India’s higher education landscape. By fostering close collaboration between academia and industry, the programme aims to produce graduates who are job-ready and equipped to meet the evolving needs of the workforce. The programme also emphasises post-apprenticeship support, ensuring that students receive career guidance and job placement services after completing their degrees.
Overall, the Apprenticeship-Embedded Degree Programmes represent a progressive step toward bridging the gap between education and employability in India, preparing students for a competitive job market with the skills and knowledge required to succeed.
