In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, universities and colleges across Uttar Pradesh are set to introduce apprenticeship-embedded degree programmes (AEDP) from the 2025-26 academic session, beginning on July 1. The initiative is part of the PEHLE-UP (Project for Excellence in Higher Learning Education in UP) project and aims to integrate skill-based learning into mainstream higher education.
According to officials from the state higher education department, preparations are underway to roll out four new undergraduate programmes developed by Sector Skill Councils (SSC). These include:
- BSc in Tourism and Hospitality Operations
- BCom in Banking, Financial Services and Insurance
- BCom in Retail Operations Management
- BCom in Logistics
These specially designed courses are intended to enhance the employability of graduates, especially those pursuing commerce and service-oriented careers.
Dr Amit Bhardwaj, Director of Higher Education, Uttar Pradesh, confirmed the development and stated, “These new specially designed courses will be helpful in opening the way for a better future for the youth.”
Implementation Process and University Approval
Special Secretary (Higher Education) Shipu Giri has directed all state universities to begin the approval process by presenting the courses through the Commerce and Science faculties during the upcoming Board of Studies (BOS) meetings. Once approved, the courses will be reviewed by the respective Faculty Boards and implemented upon clearance from the Academic and Executive Councils.
Officials noted that there are no immediate obstacles to launching these programmes, as Vice-Chancellors are authorized to seek statutory approvals concurrently with implementation.
NEP 2020 Emphasis on Industry-Relevant Education
The introduction of AEDP programmes reflects NEP 2020’s vision of blending academic learning with vocational training. These new degree courses are tailored to meet industry demands by embedding apprenticeship opportunities within academic curricula. This ensures students gain practical experience alongside theoretical knowledge, thereby improving job readiness upon graduation.
CRISP Support and Institution Coordination
To facilitate a smooth rollout, the Centre for Research in Schemes and Policies (CRISP) will provide necessary support to universities and colleges. Institutions requiring clarification or assistance have been instructed to appoint a nodal resource person and share their contact details—name, post, mobile number, and email—with CRISP’s state lead, Prof Balraj Chauhan.
Conclusion
The AEDP initiative under the PEHLE-UP project marks a significant step towards bridging the gap between higher education and employment in Uttar Pradesh. By aligning with NEP 2020 and introducing sector-specific courses, the state aims to equip students with skills that match the evolving job market. This approach not only boosts employability but also ensures a dynamic and practical education system for future generations.
